Liverpool reveal plans for new Heysel memorial

Liverpool have announced plans to build a new memorial at Anfield to mark the 40th anniversary of the Heysel Stadium disaster.

Thirty-nine football fans died when a wall collapsed ahead of the 1985 European Cup final in Brussels on May 29. When Liverpool fans were causing chaos and Juventus fans rushed into the area.

And the bonds formed through grief and mutual respect in the aftermath of the tragedy,” a Liverpool statement said.

“The memorial is made from carefully select materials and features an impressive inscription. With the names of the 39 fans who died at Heysel Stadium on 29 May 1985.”

The new memorial, dubb ‘Forever Bound’, will be move to a yet-to-be-decide location to provide a more visible and accessible space for reflection and remembrance.

After a five-month trial that follow the tragedy. 14 Liverpool fans were found guilty of manslaughter and sentence to three years in prison.

The investigation has suggest that Belgian police and authorities should held partially responsible for what happen at Heysel. Which result in the English club ban from European football for five years. While Liverpool were give an additional year.
